William is fourteen when he finally realizes something is different. He's always known that he's different because of needing blood, like his mother does, and the alien aspects he gets from his father, but this is something else.

He returns from school, quiet as usual, but hoping that his siblings aren't around so he can talk to Mom alone.

The house is quiet right now. April is in her art room, taking advantage of the quietness to work on a painting.

His younger siblings haven't returned from school yet. And it seems that his wish to have a moment alone with his mother is very possible.

He drops his backpack in his room, making enough noise that she'll likely hear him. He lays out his homework on his desk... just so he doesn't forget to do it later. He knows he won't be able to focus right now.

William 'casually' wanders to the art room, pretending like he's just curious what she's working on, keeping quiet so he doesn't disrupt her groove.

April might not have superhearing like her husband does, but she has something else... that sixth sense about her children. She can sense William coming home. Quietly laying his homework on his desk.

Standing in the doorway of her artroom.

"Good afternoon William." She doesn't even turn to greet him. But she does set down her paintbrush for a moment.

"Hi, Mom." He has his hands in his pockets, trying to look casual. Just another day after school. Of course, given that his mother is psychic, he knows that it likely won't work.

She knows something is on his mind. But April never used her powers to pry into her children's mind. She rathered they talk to her, honestly.

"How was school William?"

"It was okay. I passed all my exams." Not a surprise, he's always been a good student. It's easy to study hard when you don't have much of a social life.

Which is something that's on his mind right now.

Her three eldest are very studious children. Each shined in their own areas of course, but they always made her proud.

April walks gently towards her son. "That is good."

"Did you want something to eat?" She can sense the something on his mind needs some encouragement to be addressed.

"That'd be great," he says with a small smile. He loves his mother's cooking, and not only because she knows the best way to make it taste to someone of their heritage.

It also helps to have something to share, to ease them into the topic he wants to bring up. It helps him feel closer to her.

There are many treats and foods that April has learned to cook with blood. She has taught William a few of these recipes too.

She knows it is important of him to fit in.

"Your grandfather was hoping for you to visit again some day." The vampireworld allows both of them the freedom to be themselves.

"That'd be nice to go again sometime." He's still shy around the other vampires, but at least he knows he can be himself there.

He doesn't have to be asked to help make their snacks, joining in to work with her. His father values hard work and doing your part, especially if you're going to get anything out of it.

She sometimes worries about him. William is shy around humans. He is shy around the other vampires.

He was such a sick boy when he was little. It caused a lot of worry.

And for a while, they work together in silence.

"It is nice to see Spike happy there. He found his home."

"Like you found yours here." He's always been struck by how much she must've loved Dad to move to a whole different world for him.

April has shown the children her home universe. All of them have known where she came from.

"Of course I have. I found my happiness here." First Clark. Then her children.

William goes quiet for a moment. "Mom... how did you know when you were interested in Dad?" he asks eventually.

A small smile appeared on her face when she remembered. "I was attracted to him at first sight. I never knew how deep it would get..."

"Not until I was concerned for his well-being. And he for mine..."

"But how did you know? That you were interested in... guys." He knows that she won't judge him for anything that he says, but he's still so cautious and introverted.

"The way just looking at him made me feel. Like I was alive. Like I was walking on air."

"The vampire inside me desired him, just as much." April is a little cautious in how much she tells him. He is still only 14.

But he needs to know a little about his vampire heritage too. "I wanted to bite him. Taste him."

He's quiet for a few minutes, absorbing that. And he hesitates to speak, but he knows that she'll understand. "I've been... wanting that, sometimes."

"Biting someone?" April can sense that is the source of his quietness.

"Tell me about him." And yes, she uses the term him.

"...he's... in my writing class." It's a bit of a jolt for her to get right to the heart of the matter, but she knows her kids. "We've worked on a couple of projects together. I proofread his papers, we do some studying together."

"I can't imagine how difficult that is. Sitting so close. Smelling him everyday." April only saw Clark randomly after they first met.

"How long have you had the urges?"

"I don't know. A couple of weeks. I didn't know what it was at first." He's always gotten his blood in his food, or drink, never from a living creature. Especially not a person. And when he realized that was what he was feeling, he was initially horrified. What kind of monster would want to bite another person? Especially one that they like?

But... knowing that it isn't quite that way, that it's not a bad thing, that makes things a little different.

"You have never feed off a person before." April has sheltered him from that experience.

"You know how you feel when you drink blood... that elation. That fullfillment. How good it feels?"

"It becomes a hundred times better getting it fresh. And the thing you must understand William..." April gently touches his hand. A little nervous about telling him about this. "It is a sensual feeling. One that can make you lose control."
